East of Afton is a newly formed traditional bluegrass band that grew out of some jam sessions among a group of friends in Richmond, Va., several of whom live in the same neighborhood.  All of them played guitar but wisely decided that a seven-guitar bluegrass band would not fly.  So most of them learned new instruments:  Dr. Jon Marks the Scruggs-style banjo, Dr. Randy Fitzgerald the clawhammer banjo, George Brown the mandolin, Phillip Gravely the harmonica, Scott Sayles the dobro, and Brian Sullivan the stand-up bass. Chef Martin Gravely, believe it or not, plays the guitar but is learning the fiddle.  Phillip Gravely, who writes most of the group’s original material, handles the vocals, as do Fitzgerald and Brown. The group got its name from being a bluegrass band way to the east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the more traditional bluegrass region of the state.
